The manufacturer of Pedigree canned dog food has issued a voluntary recall of two of its products due to possible metal and plastic contamination.

What we know:

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says Mars Petcare US, Inc. issued the recall for two lots of Pedigree Can High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor 13.2oz for dogs after their quality control process determined the two lots had been sent to a third-party vendor for destruction, but it was discovered later that the products were fraudulently diverted and sold into the marketplace in the United States.

Pedigree Can High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor 13.2oz for dogs
Lot codes: 613C3KKCFC & 613C1KKCFC

Mars Petcare US, Inc. is working with authorities to determine how the recalled products entered the marketplace and the company says it remains committed to protecting pets and helping consumers identify and remove the affected products from use.

Why you should care:

The FDA says health risks to dogs from ingesting sharp foreign objects can range from choking to lacerations or blockages in the gastrointestinal tract and Mars Petcare US, Inc. says they have not received any reports of pet illness or injury to date.

What you can do:

Consumers whose dogs consumed the recalled product and are concerned about the dog’s health should contact their veterinarian.
