I think about her every day,&#8221; Gertsch said.<\/p> <!-- --><p>The backstory:<\/p> <!-- --><div><\/div> <!-- --><p>Hodges was a 64-year-old mother of five and grandmother of nine when she was found dead inside her St. Petersburg apartment on April 18, 2002. Investigators say there were no signs of forced entry, no murder weapon was ever recovered, and despite years of investigative work, no one has ever been arrested.<\/p> <!-- --><div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium_large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1702\" height=\"432\" src=\"https:\/\/tampamovingjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/5b3fb975c0519c41343ca94b1f809a0b-768x432.webp\" width=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tampamovingjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/5b3fb975c0519c41343ca94b1f809a0b-768x432.webp 768w, https:\/\/tampamovingjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/5b3fb975c0519c41343ca94b1f809a0b-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/tampamovingjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/5b3fb975c0519c41343ca94b1f809a0b.webp 932w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n <\/div> <!-- --><p>Today, the case remains unsolved, but investigators say a renewed effort is underway to try to identify the person responsible.<\/p> <!-- --><h2>A mother remembered<\/h2> <!-- --><p>What they&#8217;re saying:<\/p> <!-- --><p>Hodges was more than a homicide victim. She was the woman who raised five children, including four boys, largely on her own, and whose life revolved around her family.<\/p> <!-- --><p>&#8220;She was a beautiful woman\u2026 she was sweet. She didn\u2019t have a mean bone in her body,&#8221; Gertsch said.<\/p> <!-- --><p>Gertsch said his mom loved hearing stories about his travels around the world.<\/p> <!-- --><p>&#8220;Every time I backpacked around the world, she always loved to hear stories. I loved going over there and we\u2019d have dinner, and I\u2019d tell her stories about my travels,&#8221; Gertsch said.<\/p> <!-- --><p>Hodges\u2019 children and grandchildren, Gertsch says, were her world.<\/p> <!-- --><p>&#8220;That\u2019s what drove her. That was her life force,&#8221; Gertsch said.<\/p> <!-- --><p>Gertsch still talks about his mom with the kind of warmth that reveals just how much of her presence remains in his life.<\/p> <!-- --><p>&#8220;She was an angel in a way,&#8221; Gertsch said.<\/p> <!-- --><h2>The murder<\/h2> <!-- --><p>Timeline:<\/p> <!-- --><p>On April 18, 2002, Hodges\u2019 friend and neighbor, Vivian, became concerned when Hodges did not answer the door.<\/p> <!-- --><p>&#8220;I went back in an hour, and she still didn\u2019t answer,&#8221; Vivian said.<\/p> <!-- --><p>The two women had exchanged keys in case of an emergency, so Vivian let herself inside Patricia\u2019s apartment.<\/p> <!-- --><p>&#8220;If I thought anything was wrong, I wouldn\u2019t have gone in,&#8221; Vivian said.<\/p> <!-- --><p>Inside, she found Hodges dead in the bedroom.<\/p> <!-- --><p>At the time, investigators said Hodges had been stabbed. Police now refer to the manner of death as &#8220;upper body trauma.&#8221;<\/p> <!-- --><p>Gertsch says he got the devastating news from one of his brothers while he was at work.<\/p> <!-- --><p>&#8220;He called me at work, and he just said, \u2018Rush home, Mom\u2019s dead.\u2019 That\u2019s it. And I just lost it and ran out of the office,&#8221; Gertsch said.<\/p> <!-- --><p>Outside the apartment, Hodges\u2019 children gathered as police dusted for fingerprints and examined the scene.<\/p> <!-- --><p>Investigators say there were no signs of forced entry, leading the family to believe Hodges may have known the person who came to her door.<\/p> <!-- --><p>&#8220;My mom never opened the door for anybody, especially at night. If she didn\u2019t know you\u2026 even when I knocked, she\u2019d say, \u2018Who\u2019s me?\u2019&#8221; Gertsch said.<\/p> <!-- --><p>Hodges had last been seen the night before. By 11 a.m. the next morning, she was dead.<\/p> <!-- --><h2>A case that went cold<\/h2> <!-- --><p>St. Pete police interviewed neighbors, residents and people close to Hodges in the days after the murder.<\/p> <!-- --><p>&#8220;They spoke to a number of different individuals\u2026 anybody that was close to her at the time they spoke to. They considered every available suspect at the time,&#8221; Detective Wally Pavelski, who now works the case as a cold case detective, said.<\/p> <!-- --><p>But detectives never found the murder weapon.<\/p> <!-- --><p>And they never developed enough evidence to arrest anyone.<\/p> <!-- --><p>&#8220;It hasn\u2019t led to a definitive suspect at this point, so that\u2019s what we\u2019re hoping to clarify,&#8221; Pavelski said.<\/p> <!-- --><p>Over the years, the family says they received conflicting information that only deepened their frustration.<\/p> <!-- --><p>&#8220;They told us they\u2019d probably have it solved by Thanksgiving,&#8221; Gertsch said. &#8220;Twenty-four Thanksgivings have now come and gone.&#8221;<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/tampamovingjournal.com\/?p=1697\">Tampa man loses hundreds to scammers impersonating sheriff\u2019s office as more Floridians are targeted by scams<\/a><\/p> <!-- --><p>A year after Hodges\u2019 death, family members say they were told by investigators she had been sexually assaulted and that may have been the motive.<\/p> <!-- --><p>But Detective Pavelski says the autopsy did not show signs of sexual assault, and the motive remains unclear.<\/p> <!-- --><p>In 2003, the family also realized Hodges\u2019 jewelry \u2014 including pieces she wore regularly that read &#8220;Number One Grandma&#8221; and &#8220;Number One Mom&#8221; \u2014 were missing.<\/p> <!-- --><p>Whether those items were ever tracked down remains unclear.<\/p> <!-- --><p>At one point in 2013, detectives publicly indicated they had a person of interest, but still lacked enough evidence for an arrest.<\/p> <!-- --><p>For Gertsch, hope began to fade.<\/p> <!-- --><h2>A promise to keep fighting<\/h2> <!-- --><p>Gertsch says his sister Sue had long been the one pushing for answers in their mother\u2019s case.<\/p> <!-- --><div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium_large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1703\" height=\"432\" src=\"https:\/\/tampamovingjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/092dc872526086a3c9ef834416a11972-768x432.webp\" width=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tampamovingjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/092dc872526086a3c9ef834416a11972-768x432.webp 768w, https:\/\/tampamovingjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/092dc872526086a3c9ef834416a11972-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/tampamovingjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/092dc872526086a3c9ef834416a11972.webp 932w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n <\/div> <!-- --><p>Then, Sue died.<\/p> <!-- --><p>&#8220;That was one thing I told my sister on her deathbed, that I would pick it back up and start running with it,&#8221; Gertsch said.<\/p> <!-- --><p>Gertsch has kept notebooks over the years, documenting questions, leads and thoughts about the case.<\/p> <!-- --><p>Gertsch feels like something had to have been missed in the initial investigation.<\/p> <!-- --><p>&#8220;There has to be something\u2026 I don\u2019t know what they collected, but there has to be something,&#8221; Gertsch said.<\/p> <!-- --><h2>New investigation<\/h2> <!-- --><p>Dig deeper:<\/p> <!-- --><p>Now, detectives say Hodges\u2019 case is being re-examined with fresh eyes.<\/p> <!-- --><p>Pavelski says St. Pete police are working with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Pinellas County Forensics Laboratory experts to review evidence and determine what could benefit from additional testing.<\/p> <!-- --><p>&#8220;They did extensive lab work on this case\u2026 the last time they did lab work was in 2017,&#8221; Pavelski said.<\/p> <!-- --><p>Investigators hope newer forensic techniques could help generate stronger evidence.<\/p> <!-- --><p>&#8220;Hopefully we\u2019ll get stronger profiles \u2014 or actually a profile that we can look at to identify as a suspect,&#8221; Pavelski said.<\/p> <!-- --><p>Pavelski also believes someone may still be holding key information.<\/p> <!-- --><p>&#8220;Especially in a busy area like that\u2026 you would think somebody would have seen something or they know something. I think now is the time to tell us if you know.&#8221;<\/p> <!-- --><p>After two decades, some witnesses have died.
