LAKELAND, Fla. – Two people were taken to the hospital with critical injuries after an I-4 crash that is now causing major delays in Lakeland.

Westbound I-4 Lakeland closure
What we know:
The Florida Department of Transportation said I-4’s westbound lanes are closed to all traffic just west of Exit 38, which is near State Road 33 in Lakeland.
Emergency crews have responded, and took the two people with critical injuries to the hospital.

What we don’t know:
Officials have not yet confirmed the cause of the vehicle crash or the total number of vehicles involved. Authorities have not released the identities or current medical status of the two critically injured people.

What’s next:
All westbound lanes of I-4 are being diverted off the highway at Exit 38, and officials said the westbound I-4 on-ramp from State Road 33 is also closed. Drivers in the area should expect delays and are being asked to seek an alternate route.
